Here are 10 common reasons people use for not wanting to grow their business, or to get a business coach to help them with that:
If you don’t want to grow your business, because you like to working, maybe coaching is not for you. But that limits the exposure your business will get because once you are busy, you won’t have the time to do much marketing, or at least not consistently. So, if you want a more consistent income, that is going to be hard to get. And of course, after you retire, there is nothing left after all your efforts to build it in the 1st place. But that is a choice to give up the value of a future sale.
Some people seem to think that a lifestyle business means you do all the work. Maybe. It seems more like the ultimate lifestyle business is one that you build to work without you having to be there. But if doing the craft yourself is more important than building financial independence, then that is a very personal decision. And business coaching is not for you.
There are some who tell me they do not want to get rich. That might have a basis in the old story that money is the root of all evil. When I ask them if they are good people, they all say yes. So, what could good people do with more money? They could do more good! Couldn’t they? For example; employ people, contribute to charities, fund new programs for good works, take their children on educational trips, etc. Again, a personal decision. And again, coaching will probably not help you unless you are ready to reconsider those beliefs and become the good person who has a lot more money.
After those, the reasons to not want to grow their business seem to have a basis in not knowing a particular skill, or how to handle a particular kind of situation. There is a limit to what we know. There is a bunch we know we don’t know. Usually there is even more that we don’t know we don’t know. This is where an outside perspective can be helpful.
For example, “I don’t have enough time…” In reality, we use our time on the things we think are most important, or most pleasurable. Maybe doing some specific task seems more urgent than doing things that grow the business to make money systematically. Partly that might require learning new skills. Which ones will depend on which issues the business is currently dealing with. Could be marketing. Could be financial management. Or anything in between. They often include managing & leading people. These may be tasks we perceive are not pleasurable – until we can connect the activity to the benefit of making much more money, with free time to enjoy it.
The reason “It’s too expensive…” is similar. We use money on things that seem important. If you put money into a box, and it gives you double that money back, how often would you put money into that box? Having a coach should produce profit. If you pick a coach that has a system that can guide you through a process to make money systematically, coaching should produce many times more profit than the cost. Would that be pleasurable?
These reasons all seem to put a limit on a person's own success. The amount of work needed to build a business that works without you is the same as operating the business yourself. The only difference is the type of work you do. Somehow, having a business that works without you – that brings you income, and the ability to sell at a premium - seems to be the ultimate lifestyle business – don’t you think? So then, the question is if you actually do want more, but have not yet been ready to say it, then it probably is time to at least talk to a coach and find out what could be possible, what is needed for you to get what you really want, and how that might be accomplished. Then decide if coaching makes sense for your situation after that.
