Chaos in Business

Tips to stop the need for fire-fighting in your business

Several small business owners have told me they constantly “fight fires” in their businesses.  Some of them describe their life as frustrating, to the point of painful.

When they tell the details, they describe an environment of conflict or drama among their team.  The owner has a clear picture of how to get things done.  But sometimes there is an individual (or several individuals) who persist in doing things the owner did not want.  Or not doing things that the owner expected.  Or doing things in other ways that produce different results than desired.  These can result in extra cost to get work done, or require rework because the customer was left unsatisfied, costing more money than expected, and leaving the owner feeling frustrated

As a result, the owner frequently says he needs to take direct control to fix the situation or fix the customers perception.  None of this improves the business’ reputation (brand).  It also reduces the opportunity for repeat business and number of referrals because customers do not feel fully satisfied.  The owners go on to say they don’t see how to move the business forward.  In either case, this situation always results in lower profit.

If this sounds familiar - you have choices.

  • You can continue to live this way.  Choose to continue what you are comfortable doing, and take a relatively long time to grow profit.
  • Or you can change by doing what has worked for thousands of businesses before you.

These situations happen most often because the owner skipped steps along the path to grow their business.  Unfortunately, the necessary steps to improve results are not as much fun as selling.  But done effectively, they always improve profit.

Business owners could see a much more pleasant experience – with a good income, lots of free time to enjoy it, and a well operating team.  If that is what you want, and you don’t want to take the long route – start by going back to reconsider your business Vision, Mission, and Culture Statement.  How clear and specific are they?

Once you have better clarity, learn Money Mastery (using all your financial reports), and then learn how to Master Delivery.  Delivery Mastery is not just about how you do your product or service.  It is how you develop Processes, Roles & Responsibilities, Key Performance Indicators, and Management Systems for every function in the business.  These are important tools to train people more effectively, and ensure they see exactly what you are paying them to do – and hold them accountable to get it done successfully. If you have clear expectations of what results they need to achieve, then they know immediately if they are successful, and can make the necessary adjustments. Or you can help them make adjustments.
