3-1/2 Tips for Getting the Most from your TEAM

by Coach Steve Chiama

A lot of business owners realize they need help to grow their capacity to grow their business.  And that is exactly the right strategy.  The more people on their TEAM, the more clients they can serve, the more Revenue they can make, the more Income the owner can make.

But the process is often not as simple as that.  Many owners find that the more people, the more headaches, and the less satisfaction they feel.  Some business owners fear that so much, they hold themselves back from building a Team and choose to work alone.

If your goal is to enjoy a great income, build wealth, plus have the freedom to not have to work IN the business every day, a Team will need to be part of your plan.  There are several key steps that can make this process a lot more enjoyable.  Here are 3;

  • A really good 1st step is to have a really clear and compelling Vision for the business.  This is not for you personally.  The purpose is to develop a compelling rallying point for all members of the TEAM to focus their energy and effort to achieve and be part of something big.  It can also create an environment conducive to upward growth for them.
  • A 2nd really good step, is to collaborate regularly and openly with your Team about goals and results.  Goals for results.  Goals for activities that will achieve those results goals.  And regular meetings to discuss how well the activities levels are doing to achieve those goals.  And therefore, what adjustments need to be made.
  • Another really good step is to have clear descriptions of HOW to get things done, based on the Vision and Goals.  Checklists, flowcharts, targets and performance standards may seem boring and not lead directly to your income.  But if all that information is in your head, it does not get into theirs very effectively. So, those tools provide a much better basis for training new people quickly, which does lead to increasing your income.  It also provides a basis for determining if work is being done correctly, so that each Team member and you can both see objectively if they are on track.

Theoretically, these steps can be done any time during the growth of the firm.  However, waiting until the business is “big enough to need them” usually means they never get done.  They are foundational steps.  Like any journey, starting at the beginning is usually best.  They are going to be living documents for the life of the business.  Making them perfect first is never going to happen.  The businesses who skip these steps often find that they need to shrink back to start over and then do it all again.
